What is DSA?

The Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) provides additional support beyond your regular student finance to cover expenses related to your studies, including equipment, mental health assistance, Autism mentoring, Study Support, travel, and printing. This allowance is available to students facing extra costs due to a mental health condition, long-term illness, learning difference or any other form of disability.

You may seek assistance for:

  1. Specialised equipment, like a laptop necessary due to your disability.
  2. Non-medical support, such as a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter or a specialized note-taker.
  3. Non-medical helpers, counsellors who can help with mental health.
  4. Specialist Autism Mentors (working with a range of differences including ADHD).
  5. Additional travel expenses required for attending courses or placements because of your disability.
  6. Study Skills Support, one-to-one.
  7. Other disability-related study costs, such as extra printing for proofreading.

The amount of support and its allocation are based on your individual needs, irrespective of your household income or circumstances. Importantly, the Disabled Students' Allowance does not require repayment.

For the academic year 2024 to 2025, eligibility criteria include having a disability under the Equality Act 2010, which affects your ability to study. Disabilities encompass various conditions like specific learning difficulties (e.g., dyslexia, ADHD), mental health issues (e.g., anxiety, depression), physical disabilities (e.g., requiring crutches, wheelchair, or specialized keyboard, desk or chair), sensory impairments (e.g., visual impairment, deafness, hearing impairment), and long-term health conditions (e.g., cancer, chronic heart disease, HIV).

ACT Student Support provides Non-medical helper for students in recipe of DSA.  We provide specialist mentors who are qualified counsellors and experts in Neurodiversity, inclusion and equality.

ADHD

ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects an individual's ability to pay attention, control impulses, and regulate hyperactivity. ADHD is a recognized medical condition, and its diagnosis and treatment are typically managed by healthcare professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and pediatricians.

Navigating university with ADHD can present a unique set of challenges, but with the right strategies and support, you can still excel academically. Here are some common problems you may experience and some potential solutions:

  1. Difficulty with Focus and Attention: Maintaining focus during lectures or while studying can be challenging.
    • Solution: Try using techniques like the Pomodoro method (working for short, focused intervals), finding a quiet study space, and minimizing distractions. Consider discussing medication options with a healthcare professional if appropriate.
    •
  2. Procrastination: ADHD can make it difficult to initiate tasks or stick to deadlines.
    • Solution: Break tasks into smaller, manageable steps, use to-do lists or apps, and set specific deadlines for each part. Consider working with one of our mentors to develop strategies to combat procrastination.
    •
  3. Time Management: People with ADHD often struggle with time management and estimating how long tasks will take.
    • Solution: Use digital or physical planners (which we can provide), set alarms, and create a daily schedule. Practice time-blocking to allocate specific times for different tasks.
    •
  4. Organization and Forgetfulness: Misplacing items, forgetting appointments, or losing track of assignments can be common.
    • Solution: Invest in organizational tools like calendars, planners, or apps. Establish routines and habits to keep things organized. Consider medication or non-medication strategies recommended by a healthcare professional.
    •
  5. Impulsivity: ADHD may lead to impulsive decisions or actions, which can affect academic and personal life.
    • Solution: Pause before making important decisions, use self-regulation techniques like deep breathing or mindfulness, and speak to us about developing impulse control strategies.
    •
  6. Test Anxiety: The pressure of exams can exacerbate ADHD symptoms.
    • Solution: ACT can help you practice relaxation techniques, like deep breathing or meditation, to manage anxiety. Request accommodations from your university's disability services, such as extended exam time or essay extensions (which you are entitled to through your DSA).
    •
  7. Social Challenges: Building and maintaining relationships can be challenging due to impulsivity or inattention.
    • Solution: Consider joining study groups or clubs to foster connections with peers who share your interests. Communication and Mentoring can help improve social skills.
    •
  8. Medication Management: If prescribed medication, keeping track of dosages and refills can be challenging.
    • Solution: Use pill organizers, set alarms or reminders, and work closely with a healthcare professional to find the right medication and dosage.
    •
  9. Seeking Support: Many students with ADHD hesitate to seek help due to stigma or lack of awareness.
    • Solution: Reach out to us ACT Student Support as we have qualified counsellors and a disability service for support. With ACT you can join small support groups or seeking help to learn coping strategies.
    •
  10. Advocating for Yourself: It's essential to communicate your needs to professors and university staff.
    • Solution: Be proactive in seeking accommodations through the disability services office. Talk to your professors about your ADHD and work together to find solutions that help you succeed.
    •

Remember that ADHD is a unique challenge, and what works for one person may not work for another. At ACT Student Support we tailor your support strategies to meet your specific needs.  ADHD doesn't define your abilities; with the right tools and support, you can thrive academically and personally.

Student Motivational Profile

Introducing the Motivational Profile: Unveiling the Driving Force Behind Your University Journey

At ACT Student Support, we recognize the significance of motivation in the lives of students. That's why we offer a unique solution—an in-depth "Motivational Profile" designed to explore and understand the various dimensions of your motivation for studying at university.

Using a comprehensive bio-psycho-social model, we delve into the intricacies of your motivation, viewing it as a multidimensional continuum encompassing intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, and amotivation. By conducting this profile, we aim to unravel your curiosity for the subject, your level of interest and enjoyment in the learning process, as well as any social prestige or economic aspirations involved.

The Motivational Profile not only provides valuable insight into your current motivations but also equips you with the knowledge to make informed decisions when selecting future courses. By examining factors such as your childhood experiences, parental influence, learned behavior, and information processing, we gain a holistic understanding of your knowledge base, values, and skills, helping you chart a path towards a fulfilling future.

We understand that maintaining motivation throughout your degree is crucial. By delving into the depths of your motivational psychology, we can uncover the intrinsic drivers that will fuel your passion and perseverance, enhancing your chances of success.

So, why not take a deeper dive into your motivational landscape? Let us help you unlock your true potential by illuminating the driving force behind your university journey.

Equality and Diversity

At ACT, we recognize the diversity of experiences related to mental health, understanding that each student's journey is shaped by their unique circumstances. Our commitment is to provide tailored support to individuals based on their specific needs, including those with Autism and ADHD.

We advocate for supporting students in understanding the distinct nature of university learning, marked by self-directed work, diverse assessments, placements, and exams. The causes of mental ill health are multifaceted, impacting thoughts, perceptions, feelings, and behaviors. Transitioning to university life, especially for those with Autism and ADHD, can be particularly challenging, leading to stress and feelings of isolation. We acknowledge the importance of addressing these challenges and strive to create an inclusive environment that fosters new social networks.

We believe that mental health needs are universal, affecting individuals of all ages. For younger individuals, the journey into adulthood, marked by self-management, financial responsibilities, domestic duties, and exploration of sexuality and gender identities, can be overwhelming. Furthermore, mental health challenges often first emerge during young adulthood.

Similarly, many older individuals are returning to university or attending for the first time. While this presents a wonderful opportunity, it also comes with unique challenges, such as balancing academic study with existing life commitments like caregiving responsibilities and employment. Additionally, some adult learners may be returning to education with pre-existing mental health conditions. At ACT, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all students, considering the diverse range of experiences they bring to their educational journey.
